The 22 musicians' instruments and voices were amplified in the magnificent Terrace Theater at the world-renowned Kennedy Center of Performing Arts. All proceeds from the concert were donated to MLI for the sponsorship of mine detection dogs (MDDs) to "sniff out" landmines in Azerbaijan.

The Voice of Orchid Charity Concert was held on Tuesday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m., at the Kennedy Center, 2700 F Street, NW.  Thank you to all those involved! It was a tremendously successful fundraising event.

Background and History

Mine Detection Dogs "sniff out" landmines, clearing land 30 times faster than manual deminers.

Massive landmine contamination in western Azerbaijan poses an enormous risk to men, women, and children as they return to their homes to work, live, and play. As communities work to rebuild after years of war, mines pose deadly obstacles to establishing the safe and productive use of the land.

Since 2005, MLI has partnered with the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA) to support landmine clearance operations, helping to build ANAMA’s MDD capacity through the donation of highly trained MDDs. MDDs and their human handlers work as teams, searching wide swaths of land up to 30 times faster than manual deminers. To date, these MDD teams have searched and returned over 32 million square meters of formerly contaminated land to safe use.

In 2021, MLI and ANAMA launched a multi-year partnership effort to provide 30 MDDs over two years to expand ANAMA’s demining capabilities. The US-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce (USACC) is proud to contribute to these efforts and has worked with U.S. and Azerbaijan-based companies to sponsor two MDDs. Through the “Voice of Orchid” concert, USACC hopes to raise the funds for another highly-trained lifesaving canine. MLI is grateful for the support of USACC and the Azerbaijani community.
