MLI goes to Dayton, OH: Honoring 30 Years of the Dayton Peace Accords and the Dayton Dog Campaign

Updated: Oct 14

The Marshall Legacy Institute (MLI) is headed to Dayton, Ohio, to participate in the 30th Anniversary Commemoration of the Dayton Peace Accords!

It has been 30 years since Dayton hosted the peace talks that ended the 3.5-year Bosnian War at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. For 21 of those years, MLI and our partners have been hard at work in Bosnia and Herzegovina, clearing over 3.5 million square meters of land.

You can join MLI for a free event on Saturday, October 18, 2025 — the same date Dayton was chosen to host the accords — at the Dayton Public Library, Main Branch.

This event is part of a larger series organized by the Dayton Peace Accords Anniversary Committee to honor the historic agreement that ended the Bosnian War.

🐾 6:45 - MLI Presentation and Mine Detection Dog Demonstration

MLI’s presentation will begin with a demonstration by K9 Ambassador Rico at 6:45 p.m., showcasing the vital role that mine detection dogs (MDDs) play in detecting landmines in post-conflict regions.

K9 Ambassador Rico, a retired life-saving mine detection dog, served in Bosnia & Herzegovina for six years alongside his handler, Kenan-Mahira Gluhović. Together, they searched over 600,000 m² of land, giving families the opportunity to rebuild their lives safely.

During the event, MLI will also share insights from two decades of work in Bosnia & Herzegovina, highlighting how our programs continue to help communities rebuild by removing landmines and addressing the ongoing threats they pose. This demonstration is a powerful opportunity to reflect on the progress made since the Dayton Peace Accords and the work still ahead.

🐾 7:45 - Movie Showing: In the Land of Blood and Honey

At 7:45 p.m., the evening will conclude with a screening of the acclaimed film In the Land of Blood and Honey, directed by Angelina Jolie. The film offers a poignant portrayal of the Bosnian War, perfectly complementing the evening’s theme of remembrance, recovery, and peacebuilding.

Introducing MDD Dayton: Continuing Dayton’s Legacy

MLI is also celebrating the city of Dayton’s historic role in ending the Bosnian War by launching a special fundraising campaign to sponsor and deploy another Mine Detection Dog to Bosnia: MDD Dayton.

Every MDD has the potential to save countless lives by safely identifying deadly landmines hidden underground. Donations raised through this campaign will directly fund MDD Dayton’s training, certification, and deployment. By supporting MDD Dayton, the city of Dayton will continue the life-saving legacy of MDD Rico and the 48 other MLI-sponsored hero dogs, work made possible by generous supporters like you.

We look forward to seeing you in Dayton on October 18th!
